Read Aloud Speed: 183 WPM

Silent Reading Speed: 238 WPM

A Text Analyzer & Summary Tool is a utility that provides key metrics about a piece of text. Our tool offers:

  • Reading Time: The estimated time it would take an average person to read the text silently.
  • Read Aloud Time (Speak Time): The estimated time it would take an average person to speak the text aloud.
  • Word Count: The total number of words.
  • Character Count: The total number of characters (including spaces).
  • Line Count: The total number of lines.
  • Character Count (no spaces): Total characters excluding spaces.
  • Reading Level: An estimation of the U.S. grade level needed to understand the text (e.g., High School, College, Graduate).
  • Unique Words: The number of distinct words.
  • Average Word Length: The average length of words in characters.
  • Longest Word: The longest word found in the text.
  • Sentence Count: The total number of sentences.
  • Average Sentence Length: The average number of words per sentence.
  • Paragraph Count: The total number of paragraphs.

Time estimations are based on the total word count and the selected reading speed, measured in Words Per Minute (WPM). Other counts and analyses provide deeper insights into your text's structure and complexity.

  1. Enter Your Text: Type or paste the text you want to analyze into the input area.
  2. Adjust Reading Speeds (Optional for Time Estimates):
    • The tool defaults to average speeds: 183 WPM for Read Aloud and 238 WPM for Silent Reading.
    • You can adjust these speeds using the "Slow," "Average," or "Fast" buttons under "Read Aloud Speed" and "Silent Reading Speed" to get more personalized time estimates. The current WPM will be displayed.
  3. Analyze: Click the "Analyze Text" button.
  4. View Results: The tool will display a comprehensive set of metrics, including time estimates, counts, readability, and structural analysis.
  5. Export (Optional): Use the "Copy Summary", "CSV Data", or "PDF Report" buttons to save your analysis.
  6. Clear or New Text: Use the "Clear Text" button to start over, or simply paste new text and analyze again.

WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It's a common measure of reading speed. The average WPM can vary significantly based on factors like the reader's age, education, the complexity of the text, and whether they are reading silently or aloud.

General Averages Used in This Tool (for Time Estimates):

  • Silent Reading:
    • Slow: 150 WPM
    • Average: 238 WPM (Typical adult silent reading speed)
    • Fast: 350 WPM
  • Reading Aloud (Speaking):
    • Slow: 100 WPM (e.g., for audiobooks for children, careful dictation)
    • Average: 183 WPM (Comfortable presentation or conversational pace)
    • Fast: 250 WPM (e.g., auctioneers, rapid speakers)

By allowing you to adjust the WPM, our tool helps you get a more accurate time estimate tailored to your specific needs, audience, or the nature of the content. Other metrics like word count, character count, and readability are direct measures of the text itself and not affected by WPM settings.

Word Count: Counts words by splitting text by spaces and common word-separating punctuation. Numbers are typically counted as words.

Character Count: Direct count of all characters, including spaces.

Character Count (no spaces): Direct count of all characters, excluding spaces, tabs, and newlines.

Line Count: Counts non-empty lines based on newline characters.

Sentence Count: Estimates sentences by looking for common terminal punctuation (., !, ?), attempting to handle some abbreviations.

Paragraph Count: Counts blocks of text separated by one or more empty lines.

Unique Words: Counts distinct words after converting to lowercase and removing basic punctuation. Case-insensitive.

Average Word Length: Calculated as (total characters in all words) / (total words). Based on cleaned words.

Longest Word: Finds the longest word based on character length from cleaned words.

Reading Level: Uses the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula: 0.39 * (words/sentences) + 11.8 * (syllables/words) - 15.59. Syllables are estimated heuristically.

Time Estimation: Reading and speak times are calculated using: Time (minutes) = Total Word Count / WPM. This is then converted to minutes and seconds.

  • Content Assessment: Quickly get a comprehensive quantitative overview of any text.
  • For Writers & Bloggers: Optimize content for readability, SEO, and reader engagement. Estimate article length and reading time.
  • For Speakers & Presenters: Accurately estimate speech duration and refine scripts for clarity and impact.
  • For Educators & Students: Assess text complexity, prepare for presentations, and meet assignment requirements (e.g., word counts, readability).
  • For Video & Podcast Creators: Plan script length for time segments and ensure content is easily understandable.
  • For Marketers: Tailor content length and complexity for different platforms and target audiences.
  • For UX Designers & Technical Writers: Improve user instructions and documentation for clarity and conciseness.
