How do I change the color of an existing highlight?
Currently, you cannot directly change the color of an existing highlight. You would need to:
- Select the highlighted text.
- Click the "Clear" button (in the highlight controls) to remove the current highlight from the selection.
- Choose your new desired color.
- Click the "Highlight" button again.
How many custom colors can I add?
You can add up to three (3) custom highlight colors. These colors are saved in your browser's local storage, so they'll be available the next time you use the tool on the same browser and device. If you try to add a fourth, you'll be prompted to delete an existing one first.
How does the "Copy Link" feature work? Is my text stored on your server?
The "Copy Link" feature encodes your text content, the details of your highlights (which text, what color, and its position), and your custom colors directly into the URL (in the part after the '#' symbol, known as the URL fragment or hash).
Your text is NOT stored on our servers. When someone opens the link, their browser reads this information from the URL itself and reconstructs the highlighted text. This ensures privacy but means very long texts might create very long URLs, which could have limitations in some browsers or platforms.
What happens if I paste formatted text (e.g., from Word)?
When you paste text, our tool attempts to insert it as plain text to ensure consistent highlighting and avoid conflicts with external formatting. This means bold, italics, or other styles from your source might be removed upon pasting.
What does the "Clear" button in the highlight controls do vs. "Clear Text"?
- The "Clear" button (next to "Highlight"): If you have text selected, it removes highlights only from the selected portion. If no text is selected, it removes ALL highlights from the entire document.
- The "Clear Text" button (at the bottom): This button erases ALL text content from the editor, including all highlights.
Is this tool free and safe to use?
Yes, this Online Text Highlighter Tool is 100% free. All processing, including highlighting and link generation, happens in your browser (client-side).
No text is sent to our servers unless you explicitly create and share a link, in which case the data is in the link itself, not on our servers. Custom colors are stored only in your browser's local storage. We prioritize your privacy and data security.
Can I use this on my phone or tablet?

Your Text Stays With You (Mostly!)
Client-Side Processing: All highlighting actions occur directly in your web browser. Your text is not initially sent to our servers.
Shareable Links: If you use "Copy Link", your text and highlight data are encoded within the link itself (URL fragment). This data is not stored on our servers but becomes part of the URL you share.
No Server-Side Text Storage: We do not store your primary text content on our servers. Custom colors are saved in your browser's local storage only.
By using this tool, you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Be mindful when sharing links, as they will contain your text data.
