What is Morse Code?

Morse code is a method of transmitting text information as a series of on-off tones, lights, or clicks that can be directly understood by a skilled listener or observer without special equipment. It is named for Samuel F. B. Morse, an inventor of the telegraph. Each character is represented by a unique sequence of dots (".", also called "dits") and dashes ("-", also called "dahs").

How are spaces handled in the Morse code output?

  • A standard space character (" ") in your input text is converted to a forward slash ("/") in the Morse code output. This slash typically represents the longer pause between words.
  • The individual Morse code representations of letters within a word are separated by a single space in the output string (e.g., "H E L L O" becomes ".... . .-.. .-.. ---").

Why can't I hear any sound when I click "Play"?

Audio playback requires your browser to support the Web Audio API. Most modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) support this.

  • Ensure your device's volume is turned up and not muted.
  • Some browsers might block audio from auto-playing until you interact with the page (e.g., click a button). The "Play" button itself should count as an interaction.
  • If you're using an older browser, it might not support the Web Audio API.

What audio formats can I download? Why not MP3?

Currently, you can download the Morse code audio as a WAV (.wav) file. WAV is an uncompressed audio format that is relatively easy to generate directly in the browser using JavaScript.
Encoding to MP3 format is more complex and typically requires external libraries or server-side processing, which this client-side tool does not currently implement to maintain simplicity and privacy. WAV files are widely supported and can be easily converted to MP3 using other software if needed.

What happens if I enter a character not in the Morse code map?

If you enter a character that is not defined in our Morse code dictionary (e.g., some special symbols or characters from non-Latin alphabets not commonly used in International Morse), it will be represented by a question mark ("?") in the generated Morse code string. This indicates an unrecognized character.
